Exercise:
In NASA launched em Dawn a space probe whose mission was to study two protoplanets of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The mission was completed from till orbit around Vesta and from till orbit around Ceres. Dawn was the first spacecraft to orbit two extraterrestrial bodies. includegraphicswidthtextwidth#image_path:dawn# The Dawn spacecraft was propelled by em xenon ion thrusters. In an ion thruster ions are accelerated in an electric field. The recoil is used to propel the spacecraft. Although the force produced by the ion thrust of Dawn was only mN resulting in an acceleration from to km/h in more than days the total velocity change of . km/s was a new record. A X ion with a single charged was accelerated to vO between the electrodes of the ion thrust. Calculate the acceleration voltage.

Solution:
The kinetic energy can be expressed using the acceleration voltage Delta V: sscEkin qDelta V frac m v^ It follows for the acceleration voltage that Delta V fracsscEkinq VF fracminutimes v^ qine fracminuXtimesncutimes v^ qineXtimesnce VapproxresultVP
