Exercise:
A metal ring is dropped o a horizontal magnetic field. The current flows clockwise as in the figure below. What conclusions can we draw about the magnetic field? center includegraphicswidthmm#image_path:falling-ring# center

Solution:
According to Lenz's law there has to be a force acting against the motion of the ring i.e. the resultant force caused by the induced current has to po upwards. There are several ways this is possible. The figure below shows one possibility for the forces acting on the upper and lower part. In this case the magnetic field has to po o the drawing plane and its magnitude has to decrease from top to bottom. A second solution would be a magnetic field poing out of the drawing plane that increases from top to bottom verify yourself. center includegraphicswidthmm#image_path:falling-ring-solution# center
