Exercise:
Calculate the force between two parallel plates with an area of AO charges of pm QO and a distance of dO. What would be the result according to Coulomb’s law?

Solution:
Field produced by the first plate with charge density sigmaQ/A: E_ fracsigmavarepsilon_ fracQvarepsilon_ A Force acting on the second plate in the field of the first plate: F Q_ E_ QfracQvarepsilon_ A FF fracQ^timesncepstimes A F approx FP- Using Coulomb's law the force would be sscFC FCF nckctimesfracQ^d^ FC approx FCS This result is wrong by more than three orders of magnitude which is a clear sign that Coulomb's law is not applicable in this situation because the dimensions of the plates are much greater than the distance between them.
