Solution:
A good ammeter has a very low resistance. If the ammeter is mistakenly connected as in the circuit diagram above the total resistance of the circuit is very low so that a large current is drawn from the voltage supply. This can easily destroy the ammeter. vspacemm An ammeter always has to be connected in series to the load. A voltmeter on the other hand has to be connected in parallel to the load.
